Yvonne Chaka Chaka to Light up the Superbowl!on February 18, 2010
We’re thrilled to tell you about “The Motherland Tour” concert featuring Yvonne Chaka Chaka and special guests, Lira and Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse at the Sun City Superbowl on Saturday 6 March at 8pm! Book tickets now!
The Motherland Tour
The Motherland Tour concert pays tribute to African women who are leaders in their communities in the battle against malaria, HIV/AIDS and poverty and in support of education and women’s health. Funds raised from the concert will be used to build a clinic in northern Namibia to help women and children, girls in particular, to have easy access to treatment. Additionally, a vehicle will be bought for St. Benedict’s Hospital in Ndanda in the Mtwara region of Tanzania in order to save the lives of malaria victims who cannot get to the hospital in time to be treated and die as a result. Very few artists can boast 20 albums in a solid singing career spanning 25 years. Yvonne has shared the stage with megastars such as Bono, Angelique Kidjo, Annie Lennox, Youssou N’Dour, Queen and South African legends like Johnny Clegg, Miriam Makeba and Hugh Masekela and has performed for HRM Queen Elizabeth, US President Bill Clinton and former South African President’s Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki. She has consistently developed her creative capabilities and expanded her media repertoire to include song writing, producing, broadcasting and acting. There seems to be no end to Yvonne’s talents and she has combined her endless enthusiasm, talent and generosity of spirit to become a compassionate warrior in the fight against malaria and HIV/AIDs and a champion of women and children. Yvonne has taught literacy in South Africa’s townships, promoted the rights of women and has worked to protect the rights of children throughout the African continent. She is a Trustee of the Tomorrow Trust, which helps to educate orphans and vulnerable children, a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and an Ambassador for Roll-Back Malaria. Yvonne tirelessly campaigns for medications and mosquito nets to help end malaria — a preventable and curable disease that kills 3,000 people in Africa every day. Inspired by these statistics she created her own charity, the Princess of Africa Foundation. “We want to raise awareness to help eradicate this senseless disease. People need to know more about malaria because it kills almost one million Africans a year, most of them children,” says Yvonne. Yvonne’s inimitable and distinctive alto voice is as warm as she is personable and audiences around the world have fallen in love with her. She has achieved much acclaim in the international arena and acknowledgments from an appreciative audience are reflected in her platinum, gold, and silver record sales for, Burning Up, I’m In Love With a DJ, I Cry for Freedom, Makoti, Motherland, Be Proud To Be African, Thank You Mr. DJ, Bombani (Tiko Rahini), and Umqombothi which featured in the opening scene of the 2005 hit movie, Hotel Rwanda). Yvonne has also served as Ambassador for the University of South Africa (UNISA); City of Johannesburg Tourism, South Africa’s Mpumalanga Province Tourism and Nelson Mandela’s 46664 Campaign. During 2009, Yvonne travelled on humanitarian missions to Namibia, Zambia, Vietnam, United States, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Liberia, Nigeria Rwanda, Zimbabwe, France, UK and Kenya. And now the Motherland Tour brings her back to her favourite African country, home… South Africa. These are her roots, where she feels connected to her fans and family.
