Soweto Marimba Youth League to Thrill Sun City Audienceson July 9, 2010
Vuvuzelas aren’t the only instruments being played at the moment, another unusual instrument; the marimba is making its mark on the thousands of foreigners visiting our shores this month.
Sun International is looking forward to welcoming the Soweto Marimba Youth League who will be performing at Sun City on Friday 9 July 2010. This bunch of incredibly talented kids are sure to mesmerise you with their rhythmic beats performed on the marimbas, steel drums and djembes. We guarantee that you’ll be tappin’, slappin’ and dancin’ your way through their vibrant performance!
From Humble Beginnings to High Heights
Soweto Marimba Youth League (SMYLE) is an extension of The Soweto Marimba Kidz. The band is led by Coach, Johnny Hlaba of the Dr. Mary Malahlela Primary School, in Dobsonville, Soweto. Johnny started the group 5 years ago and is known as “a man who can play any musical instrument”. SMYLE was born when Johnny noticed the kids hanging around the school with nothing to do and asked whether they’d like to learn how to play the marimbas – and they haven’t looked back!
These kids practice for hours daily, and still manage to keep up their school work in order to maintain their membership in the band. As the band members mature, they mentor kids from the Township of Soweto and pass on their skills to the next generation, so that the band is ever evolving. As a result of Johnny’s dedication, and many hours of practice, SMYLE has a collection of more than 500 songs.
