Introducing Sasha “DJ Cool” Martinengo!

5FM’s Italian stallion, Sasha Martinengo, is a veteran on the waves. He joined the station in 1994 and today is one of the country’s most popular radio and TV personalities. He currently hosts The Sasha Martinengo show on 5FM. This is certainly a far cry from the selling geyser control systems!

He started off at the national broadcaster, hosting the graveyard shift before moving to a night shift, two and a half years later. Sasha co-hosted the lunchtime show, The F&Martinengo Show, with fellow radio heavy-weight Ian F from 2002. The pair released a number of electronic house CDs and also won a South African Music Award for their work. In 2008, Ian F left the show and since then Sasha has presented his own show, The Sasha Martinengo show. He says his success on radio is because first and foremost he has a passion for what he does! This has certainly made him a popular choice as MC or DJ for various entertainment and club events nationwide.

“Sid the Sloth” (Dare we ask?), as he has also become known, has an obvious passion for music and sport. In fact his first job was as a tennis coach. He has a well-known love for all things motor sport, especially Ferrari’s Formula 1 team. Imagine his delight when he was asked to be the Formula 1 anchor on SuperSport! He has also MC’ed at this year’s annual MPH TopGear Live World Tour. Lucky guy got to meet TopGear’s Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond. This technology maniac says he loves admiring, driving and lusting over cars. He also collects models of cars, enjoys slot car racing and amateur motor racing. In fact his dream home would have 12 garages – yes, to use for all the cars he would have! Even his ideal holiday would involve going to watch motor F1 GP anywhere in the world.

It comes as no surprise that he loves all things Italian – from his favourite movie, the Godfather to his favourite city, Florence. But what you may not know about him is that he hates insects – I mean terrified, has two different colour eyes and absolutely won’t eat peas!

He describes himself as shy – I don’t think we would agree with that as he continues to push boundaries keeping his listeners entertained. He has interviewed some famous celebrities such as Jon Bon Jovi and Ed Kowalczyk and South African author Jon Van der Ruit but would love to have the chance to chat to Bernice Ecclestone and David Icke.

DJ Cool – as he is affectionately known – passed on some advice, “If you are not in bed by 10, go home”… hmm maybe Springbreak will just be the exception! Make sure you don’t miss out on partying with Sashabook your tickets to Springbreak now!
