A Special Evening with Josh Grobanon October 7, 2011
Upon the conformation of his tour to South Africa Josh Groban commented, “It is a great joy for me to return to South Africa. It remains in my heart as a country that has inspired me in so many ways and to prepare for my return visit brings back a flood of wonderful memories. It has been many years but I can’t wait to give everything I have to my amazing, and patient fans!”
With over 25 million albums sold worldwide, Josh Groban is one of the world’s best selling artists. The 30 year old, LA native first broke out in 2001 with his self titled debut album and has gone on to release 5 multi-platinum albums, the latest being 2010’s Illuminations. Groban has been nominated for more than a dozen awards, including an American Music Award, a World Music Award, a Juno Award, 2 Grammy Awards and an Academy Award. He has performed with some of the most celebrated artists in history, including Barbra Streisand, Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion. In South Africa, he is one of the most successful international artists of the past 10 years, having sold over 750 000 albums.
For all his success, Groban remains intent on staying connected, not only to his music, but also to his fans in countries around the world. Groban’s ties to South Africa are just an example of that. In 2004 Josh made his first visit to South Africa and was appointed by Nelson Mandela as an official ambassador for Mandela’s Project 46664, a campaign to help raise global awareness of HIV/AIDS. Through his own Foundation, Groban has supported Siyawela (formerly Zamimpilo Orphanage)/NOAH (KwaMashu, South Africa). In addition for his 2006 Awake record Josh recorded the song “Weeping” written by South African Dan Heyman, a song about appreciating the common humanity that lives within us all especially during troubled times of conflict. He recorded ‘Weeping’ with Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Vusi Mahlasela.
His current album, Illuminations already platinum in South Africa, teamed Josh with producer Rick Rubin (Johnny Cash, Metallica, Neil Diamond) and challenged the artist to tap deeper into his full range of talents, not only as a singer and musician, but crucially as a writer. Notable tracks include Hidden Away, Bells of New York City and Higher Window.
