Introducing Awesome Ian F!
Another radio heavyweight who’ll be creating waves during the rocking Springbreak party is, Ian Fraser aka Ian F. This DJ is Cape Town born but moved up to Joburg when he was still at school. At university, he started off studying a BA Communications but never completed the degree because his love of music and the entertainment industry sucked him in. After leaving university he worked at Sony BMG but was also involved in community radio on the sidelines. According to Ian F, one day back in 1994, he managed to convince the programme director into giving him a chance to be on air and so began his successful radio career – and the rest is history!
Ian F was one of 5FM’s longest-serving presenters and is considered to be among the best DJs to come out of the station. While at 5FM he presented and produced a number of radio shows and shocked listeners when he resigned from the station after 14 years. Ian F was part of the duo that made up the F&Martinengo Show. He and co-host, Sasha Martinengo, took over hosting the midday show on the national broadcaster in 2002. During their on-air partnership they released a number of electronic house CDs and also won a South African Music Award while working together. On his very tough decision to leave 5FM Ian F explains he was “ready for a change and new horizons” and so he welcomed a 2 year break to expand his international radio and media experience in Europe. He worked in London heading up a Sponsorship and Promotions department at First Radio Sales and travelled extensively.
On his return to South Africa he settled in Cape Town. Along with being a well known club DJ, he is also an active voiceover artist, and has worked with Nokia, M-Net, Virgin Records and many more. He is passionate about all things media and is Director of a radio and new media production company, Rosso Fox. Ian F explains that the company does some “pretty crazy things” which involves taking a brand and making it come alive on air, on the Web and in a podcast. He is currently working on launching Gauteng’s first Web radio station in summer 2010. While being back in South Africa, he has also done work for PRIMEDIA and Kagiso Broadcasting.
Some little know facts about this DJ, are that he loves Marmite. When I say love, I mean he has the cookbook, mug, toaster and wait for it… even the t-shirt! He also has an “extensive collection of South African Red Wines which are matured to perfection before being sold on”. Besides his interests in music and wine, he has a love of flying and all things aviation and one day he intends on doing his private pilot’s license.
