2013 Battle of the Giants all Style Championshipson March 28, 2013
Sun City Resort is thrilled to once again to host the 2013 Battle of the Giants Freestyle Championship and All Styles Dancesport Festival from Friday 26 April until Sunday 28 April. This internationally recognised South African Dance Teachers Association (SADTA) event has been in existence for 23 years and is acknowledged as the premier dance event in South Africa.
The Battle of the Giants is one of the qualifying events in the World Trial Circuit programme and local and international stars hope to gain points to be selected to represent their country at the various international Dance Organisation Championships.
“We should attract over 450 dancers this year,” says Bev Wood, director of SADTA “I believe that The Battle of the Giants truly is the pinnacle of dance events in South Africa and it is certainly the best platform for local dancers. Hopefully, participants will take this experience to further their careers. We also attract international judges and to date, Kirsten Dan Jensen from Denmark, an experienced judge of all street dances and also Ballroom and Latin, has been confirmed as one of our prestigious judges. It is an honour to have a judge of her calibre, adjudicate.”
Some of last year’s prizewinners will be returning to Sun City. Fifteen year old World champion, Hloni Santawane who has come first in the solo section of the World Hip Hop Championships for the last three years, will be returning to Sun City for the Battle of the Giants, but now he will be competing as an adult. For the last 3 years he has danced in the 12 to 15 category. “The challenge is going to be bigger, but I am feeling positive,” says Hloni Santawane.and organiser of the event.
Eugene Baloyi, reigning Best Hip Hop Adult dancer from last year’s Battle of the Giants, will be competing in the Adult Hip Hop solo and duo category and the group formation together with his group Kryptonite, the reigning champs of the World Hip Hop Championships.
The Festival showcases a range of dance styles from hip hop, freestyle, street dance to breakdance, electric boogie, show dance, jazz dance, to Latin & ballroom, production, disco dance and for the first time ever, para dance. The championship attracts in excess of 500 dancers per day and promises to be an energetic, colourful and fun dance competition.
